JPVIS Spring Update

Dear Juniper Point friends,

Charlotte and I were in Boothbay Harbor late last month.  The town was quiet, the sky was blue, the ocean was beautiful, and the wind was fair.  If only the temperature had been a little higher and the water in our cottage had been turned on, we would have wanted to stay for the season!

Memorial Day is only a little over a month away, and we expect to see many of our friends when we arrive to open our cottage.  The peak of the summer season follows only a month later, and we hope to see all of you then.  Following is a preliminary calendar of summer events.

Saturday, June 28                                                              Opening Reception

Saturday, July 5                                                                 Lobster Bake on Whitten’s Field

July 25-27                                                                            JPVIS Tennis Tournament

Saturday, August 2                                                            Annual Meeting

Saturday, August 2                                                            Square Dance

Wednesday, August 13                                                     Ladies’Luncheon

TBA                                                                                       Yachting Day and Kids Field Day

All of the other regular events—Tuesday night activities for the juniors, Wednesday night bridge, Yoga, and a regular schedule of tennis events—are being planned.  The Point lets us take comfort in the fact that some things change only so slightly.

Our tennis pro, Vivian Chhetri, will be back this year and is planning a regular series of events.  We expect to have the tennis tournament on the weekend of July 25-27, a bit earlier than in the past so that July players will have the opportunity to participate.

Sadly, some of our long-time friends will not be with us.  Nancy Hemenway Barton, Fredson Blake, and David Nutt, Sr., all passed away this winter.  Each of them had colorful lives and many years of enjoyment on the Point.  They will be missed.  There will be proper recognition at the annual meeting.  Our condolences go to their respective families.

JPVIS was founded in 1913 as the fields of McKown and Juniper Points yielded to increasing numbers of summer cottages.  As we approach the 100-year milestone, we expect to form a Centennial Committee to begin preparation of appropriate remembrances and festivities for the summer of 2013.

We also plan to establish a Development Committee to plan for a permanent endowment to preserve and protect this special community that has meant so much to so many people.  There will be more information about this during the summer.

We need your help with some other things this summer.  Workers for the Lobster Bake are always appreciated.  We also need one or two people to help with the Program Committee to coordinate our many activities.  If you are willing to help—in any way—please get in touch with me.

If you haven’t already done so, you can access our web site at www.jpvis.org to see photos of last summer, to get more up-to-date information about the summer ahead, and to see listings of possible cottage rentals.  We have been informed of the following possible summer rentals for 2008:

Firefly (Anne Dooley’s cottage) on McKown Point Road will be available for weeks starting June                  21, July12, August 10.  Sleeps 3 comfortably.  Fully equipped, washer and dryer,                   fireplace.  $1,000 per week.  No smoking and no pets.  Contact Anne Dooley at

                 617-296-2448 or annedooley@mindspring.com.

Andrews cottages—Need a spot on the Point for your “overflow?”  The Andrews’ “little cottage”                  is available for various weeks—possible partial weeks—during the season (sleeps 4+;                  has washer/dryer, cable tv, wi-fi).  Andrews’ “big cottage” may be available for a few                  weeks during the season (sleeps 10; has everything little cottage has plus dishwasher).                  Give a call at 802-343-6160 (Kit’s cell phone).

Prompt payment of dues is helpful for summer planning.  We especially appreciate those who pay their dues early!

                                                                                     Looking forward to summer!
